As Swami Chinmayananda said, "Children are lamps to be lit more than vessels to be filled". Children are a major focus at Chinmaya Mission. The goal of Balavihar is to "wake up the sleeping giant" in our children and inspire them to reach their maximum potential by following the values expounded by saints and sages.
Chinmaya Mission conducts the Balavihar for the purpose of teaching India’s rich spiritual heritage and the fundamentals of Vedanta to the younger generation.
Balavihar is a place for children to bloom and grow. In Balavihar we help children to make the right choices in life, because it is these choices that will determine their future. The Balavihar curriculum is based entirely on our scriptures. Through games, arts, crafts, stories, and other unique techniques, the Balavihar program imparts and reinforces spiritual and cultural values. The curriculum designed for all grade levels (Pre-K through Grade 12) is creative and dynamic, and covers a wide range of topics such as:
- Stories of Ramayana and Bhagavatam
- Symbolism in Hinduism
- Selections from Ramacharitmanasa
- Values from the Srimad Bhagavad Gita
- Hindu Culture / Sanatana Dharma
Bala Vihar classes are held each Sunday in parallel with the adult study group, from 9:15 AM to 12:30 PM. Families assemble in the school starting @ 9:15. The program starts @ 9:30 and for the first 30 minutes the children and adults jointly recite prayers, sing Bhajanas, and listen to stories before dispersing to their respective classrooms from 10:00AM-11:40AM. Adults disperse to their own moderated study group. Each grade from Pre-K to Grade 12 has a dedicated teaching staff made up of a teacher, a co-teacher and a versatile Balavihar support staff. The adult study group has a moderator and co-moderator. Once a month, we have satsang with our Acharya, Swami Shantananda.
From 11:45AM-12:30PM, we offer a variety of language classes for children and adults. In addition to Balavihar, we offer children an opportunity express their musical talents with Chinmaya Swaranjali @ BBNJ. The Swaranjali group is an extracurricular activity where children get together for practice on Friday evenings and have many opportunities to perform throughout the year.
In summary: In Balavihar, the rich cultural heritage of India, including its teachings on moral values, is taught to children and youth at different levels, using the medium of stories, drama, arts and crafts, and discussion. Children are also taught popular Bhajans, Slokas, Bhagavad Geeta Chanting, optional language lessons and youth Chorus Groups "SWARANJALI". Classes are organized by children's age, catering to a specific age group.
